This Cruising Life

Cruising is all about new experiences, new places and new challenges, so there’s no such thing as a typical day on board.

So, where shall we start? Following breakfast we might find ourselves heading up through the Sound of Mull to explore the north and west or turning south towards Jura and Islay. Along the way, a stop for lunch, with time to relax, read a book, take a few pictures or enjoy a walk ashore. Or, we might choose to sail on to reach destinations further afield.

The Hebrides are considered by many to be one of the world’s top cruising grounds for wilderness and wildlife. From the dramatic peaks of the Cuillins on Skye to the seductive sandy white beaches of Iona and Tiree you have a variety of riches to choose from. Summer in Scotland is a time of bright colours, remarkable light and abundant wildlife. Seabird colonies are alive with comical puffins in their cliff top burrows and eagles are often seen soaring over the ramparts of Duart Castle.

We will be sailing through whale-watching territory, with minke whales and basking sharks inhabiting the waters around Mull and the Small Isles and orcas often spotted in the Minches. Seals, dolphins and porpoises are our common companions at sea but the sharper eyed onboard may also catch a glimpse of otters along the shoreline or red deer on the skyline.

At the end of an exhilarating day’s sail we’ll arrive at our chosen anchorage in plenty of time for a well-earned trip ashore. As the evening settles in we’ll be able to sit back and savour the peace and tranquillity of our sheltered surroundings. The backdrop for dinner might be a glowing sunset or we may be lucky enough to enjoy a beach barbeque under a starry sky. Then, with a dram in hand, we’ll mull over the days events.

And where will we go tomorrow? Well, that’s another day…
