Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have no previous sailing experience – does this matter?
A: Definitely not! You don’t need any previous experience to enjoy one of our trips. Moonshadow is easily handled by two, however there are always lots of jobs to be done and we hope that you will enjoy participating in the routines. By the end of the week you’ll be taking the wheel, trimming the sails and navigating your way around the decks like a professional member of the crew.

Q: I’ll be coming by myself – will I fit in with other guests?
A: There is no such thing as a “typical” guest. Our visitors come from all walks of life and from a variety of age groups. Individuals, couples, families, and friends, male, female, young and old have all enjoyed Moonshadow’s hospitality. If you are looking for the opportunity to experience big boat sailing and to explore Scotland’s spectacular coastline in comfort and style, you’ll feel at home with us.

Q: Do you have an upper age limit?
A: No, however whatever your age, you must be in good health and be reasonably fit and agile. Sailing a yacht does require a certain amount of stamina and fitness, even if you are only a passenger. From our pontoon berth in the marina, you will have to climb onboard via a small step. Visits ashore will require you to board the yacht’s inflatable rib via the bathing platform on Moonshadow’s stern or, in more remote locations, you may have to climb up a ladder and on to a pier or quay.

To ensure your safety, you should be confident in your ability to handle these situations. Remember that while this may be more of a challenge than you are used to, your efforts will be rewarded with some amazing views and new experiences.

Please note that by signing our Booking Form you are declaring that your health (and the health of any other guests on whose behalf you are booking) is of the required standard.

Q: Are children welcome onboard?
A: Yes, we love having children on board and with many years of sailing as a family under our belts we are old hands! We don’t usually sail with children under the age of 12, however if your child has sailing experience and would like to join you please contact us to discuss. Children of any age are welcome if you are booking the whole yacht.

Q: What if I feel seasick?
A: Moonshadow is a large, solid yacht providing a stable platform and comfortable motion in most sea states. While we don’t plan to sail in adverse weather conditions, there may be occasions when you will experience the ocean swell, which can lead to feelings of queasiness. Don’t despair – we have a few tricks up our sleeve which will help you to avoid the worst effects.

Q: What do I need to bring?
A: A soft kitbag rather than a suitcase is more easily stowed in your cabin. We recommend that you bring practical outdoor wear, including waterproofs, comfortable footwear (non-marking soles for on deck), hat and gloves, swimsuit, sunscreen, midge repellent and adopt a “layered” approach to clothing.

We provide bedding, pillows and towels and good quality waterproof jackets and dungarees.

The only money you’ll need during your trip is for personal shopping ashore and any alcoholic drinks purchased from the ships stores.

Q: Can I charge my electronic equipment (mobile phone, laptop, tablet, mp3 player)?
A: Yes. Moonshadow has 240v/13amp outlets for charging equipment  in the saloon and in all cabins.
